Frozen Daiquiri

Frozen cocktails

Putting a summery spin on a classic, a frozen daiquiri uses blended ice for a sorbet-like texture that’s perfect for long, hot days by the beach or warm summer evenings in a bar.

Frozen cocktails are a great way to add some extra interest to a summer drink. They work best with light, fruity flavours, like the maraschino liqueur and lime juice used to make a frozen daiquiri. Here are some more frozen cocktails that might inspire you.

• Frozen mango/strawberry daiquiri. This white rum cocktail uses the same recipe as a regular daiquiri, but with the addition of fresh fruit. Fruit juice can also be used to give a punch of flavour.
• Pina colada popsicles. A novel take on a cocktail, these fruity, coconutty ice lollies are made with a dash of white rum and a few spoonfuls of sugar.
• Rum runner. The base of this cocktail is rum, banana liqueur, grenadine and fruit juice, but it’s also possible to add extra shots of fruity liqueurs such as raspberry and blackberry. Finish off the look with a skewer loaded with tropical fruits.

Daiquiri Rums

Traditionally, daiquiris are made with white rum like Havana Club Añejo 3 Años. Made from sugarcane, it is aged for a much shorter time than dark rum, which gives it its pale colour. Our light rum is aged for a minimum of three years, which enhances the flavour with notes of fruit, citrus, molasses, and oak, and it’s pale enough to be used in cocktails such as a mojito or a pina colada.

Cocktail Equipment

Most frozen cocktails require a blender to pulverise the ice into a smooth texture. However, crushed ice can be made by hand without a blender if need be. Cocktail shakers and mixing spoons are also useful, but budding mixologists can often manage without them, especially for simple recipes. For more experienced cocktail recipes, a strainer, a muddler, and a spirit measurer might be needed.

The History of the Daiquiri

The Classic daiquiri was invented over 100 years ago in Cuba. The original form of the daiquiri was made with sugar, cracked ice, lime, and rum, poured into a long glass. It quickly gained popularity in the United States, spreading from New York to Washington, and then around the country. It was the favourite drink of several notable celebrities, including legendary writer Ernest Hemingway who lived in Cuba for several years.
