Topes de Collantes

If horseback riding is your passion, check out Cuba’s second-largest mountain range, the Sierra del Escambray. Straddling the provincial borders of Sancti Spíritus, Cienfuegos and Villa Clara, the surprisingly isolated mountains are rich in flora and fauna, and steeped in history. The park’s name comes from a health resort founded in 1937. Twenty years later, Che Guevara set up camp in these hills and, three years after that, counter-revolutionaries used the same isolated mountains for their own campaign. After a day of horseback riding, stay at one of the three hotels open to foreigners where you can arrange excellent hiking tours, with or without a guide.
