Fábrica de Arte Cubano (F.A.C.)

14 Mar. 2018

We’re big fans of Fabrica de Arte Cubano, or Cuban Art Factory – one of the more interesting places to catch a live band in Havana. A multi-disciplinary cultural center that supports Cuban artists of all stripes, The F.A.C., is the culmination of Habanero musician X Alfonso’s collaborations with writers, actors, videographers, viual artists, fashion designers and other artists that started with his documentary Sin título. X Alfonso, a hip hop and afro-rock musician, explains that the creatively explosive project is an “attempt to provide Cubans with a place where they can enjoy the best of the island’s avant-garde arts.” With prices that are kept “accessible to most Cubans,” the Factory has a modern industrial vibe that contrasts with more traditional venues. Housed in the former headquarters of Havana’s electricity company in Vedado, the space pulls in locals for an exhibition or show, a cocktail on the outdoor terrace, or great live music. Reinaldo Ortega, who heads the F.A.C.’s visual arts section, says “We’re trying to reach people who have never gone to a gallery or a theatre by showing them something unusual but attractive, a spectacle.” But don’t expect to sit back and watch – at the Factory, you’re a participant, or as X Alfonso puts it: “at Fábrica de Arte, everyone is an artist.”
