Climbing Pico Turquino
We love the Sierra Maestra for trekking for the stunning nature and because it’s the revolutionary’s mountain range. It was here that the seeds of revolution were first planted. In the shadow of the country’s highest peak, Pico Turquino, the revolutionary band of brothers led by Fidel Castro established a first base, La Plata, in 1958. The government soldiers who surrounded the rebels never found it, protected as it was by the impassable jungle and a loyal network of silent locals. These days, the mountains are as lush as ever, and La Plata is still off the beaten track. You can be one of the few hikers who witness its spectacular beauty and epic views. You could stay at Villa Santo Domingo, a range of cabins in the access village of Santo Domingo.
