HAVANA CLUB X PLACES+FACES

HAVANA CLUB X PLACES+FACES

Collab

It’s been four years since Places+Faces first collaborated with Havana Club, and now the creative lifestyle powerhouse and iconic Cuban rum brand have joined forces again for a fresh summer campaign, featuring very special guests.

Places+faces

Havana Club was keen to support the 10-year anniversary of Places+Faces and continue a run of authentic, creative, and meaningful collaborations. The two brands first joined forces in 2019 to drop a limited-edition bottle, capsule collection of clothing and video content featuring Tommy Genesis, Kelvyn Colt and Dough-Boy, that was shot on location in Havana. 2023 felt like the perfect occasion to come together again and travel back to Cuba where it all began.

“Being able to return to Havana and shoot the campaign for this new Collab was very special to us.” says Ciesay, “Havana holds a special place in our hearts, and we love working with Cuban talents and a Cuban crew to help realise our vision and our love for Cuba.”

The Collab

The colours and textures of Havana inspired the limited-edition Places+Faces x Havana Club 7 bottle that sits at the centre of their 2023 collaboration. Perfectly timed for Summer, this limited-edition bottle is light and bright, as though touched by the Cuban sun. The bottle is complemented by a selection of merchandise in the Places+Faces signature style, including tees and a hoody.

Havana Club and Places+Faces invited two special guests, rapper Headie One and model Ming Savannah, to join them in Cuba and feature in the collaboration content. Headie and Ming brought their distinctive UK edge and energy, contributing to the dynamic cultural exchange that the campaign represents.

Burna Boy holding Havana Club Limited Edition bottle

Collab

Havana Club and Burna Boy celebrate the power of culture and communities with a Limited Edition of Havana Club 7. Honouring one’s roots is something that the artist and Havana Club share, from Nigeria to Cuba, and Burna Boy wanted to make sure the limited edition bottle reflected this pride in one’s origins.

Burna Boy

Burna Boy

This vibrant Havana Club 7 limited edition bottle is inspired by the traditional cultural headgear found in South Nigeria, with tassels illustrated on the front label, and a multicoloured “Aso Oke” background – a hand-woven cloth created by the Yoruba People of West Africa often adorning gowns and hats worn for celebratory ceremonies such as weddings. This is Burna Boy’s personal ode to the beauty of culture, the strength of community values and joy to defend his roots.

A toast to hope and togetherness

Honouring one’s roots is something that the artist and Havana Club share, from Nigeria to Cuba, and Burna Boy wanted to make sure the limited edition bottle reflected this pride in one’s origins. Sitting front and centre of the bottle is “Burna Boy” handwritten by the artist himself, while a palm leaf crown wraps the Havana Club logo – an ode to the African Union emblem, and the bottom part of the label integrates the Rivers State region of Nigeria, where Burna Boy was born.

A short film celebrates the intimately interwoven story between Burna Boy and Havana Club; an observance of conviviality, tribe and bonding values, be it in the comforts of one’s home or the optimism of a dancefloor, from Lagos to London. To give a voice to the « Fabric of culture », a voice over by Burna Boy himself takes this movie to the next level, making the collaboration comes to life as a connection of family and friendships via the Havana Club bottle and supporting a spirited message of love from Burna Boy himself:

It takes a great person to overcome daily trials and tribulations, and an even greater person to intentionally decide that life is for living,” he says. “As we share in the beauty of culture, community and heritage, let’s celebrate in united liberations. Please remember that you are a GIANT, today and always.” A toast to hope and togetherness that Havana Club is proud to be supporting.

A NEW CHAPTER

The collaboration between Havana Club and Skepta began in 2019, when Skepta first visited Havana, Cuba. Struck by deep and entwined links between Cuban traditions and those of his own West African Yoruba heritage through paths of migration, the first two chapters of the collaboration – a pair of redesigned Havana Club 7 Rum bottles – captured this cultural infusion in their labels, which featured traditional Nigerian symbols. The maturation of the collaboration – and an accumulation of the previous chapters of the project – Rum of Skepta was made to encapsulate a feeling of refined elegance, a symbolic emblem of growth, achievement and luxury.

The Collection

The collaboration between the artist, his fashion brand Pigalle Paris and Havana Club pays tribute to Stéphane’s days in Cuba, which in his own words “have changed his life”. It aims to celebrate togetherness, building upon common values: strong commitment towards local communities and constant advocacy for diversity and inclusivity.

Stéphane Ashpool has always been inspired by the world of music and rhythm. From his very first block parties and late-night jam sessions thrown in the top stories of Paris hotels to his acclaimed Pigalle runway shows, it is clear that music, colors & a powerful sense of community have always served as the cultural cornerstones that have supported Ashpool’s vibrant creative career.

Visiting Cuba for the first time, Stéphane was quite naturally captivated by Havana’s local music & dancing scene and the effervescent energy of its people. This vibrant world, fueled by the warming taste of Havana Club rum, resonated with Stéphane’s own story. After all, his mother was a professional dancer, and growing up in Paris Stéphane was always surrounded by many different cultures and rhythms. For him, Cuba felt like a celebration of both his past and present, and that’s how he spent the next few days: meeting and bonding with local communities, savouring their way of life.

THE COLLECTION

The acetate globally known as “Havana” has been forever an icon in the eyewear world, its name comes from the particular pigments of the Cuban tobacco leaves as they are drying to then become cigars. By creating an exclusive release of sunglasses, limited-edition bottle, long sleeve tee, and unique domino set in havana acetate, the two brands unite cultural urban scenes globally.

THE TOUR

For each city of the tour, the two brands have selected one ambassador that represents an organic growth in the local creative scene, therefore underlining their constant search of craftsmanship in today’s artistic culture. These ambassadors will team up with the Retrosu-perfuture and Havana Club for a series of online talks with their public fan base for a discus-sion on their work and their process of creation: from inspiration to conception. After all, the inspiration from tobacco leaves gave the name “havana” to the acetate, and havana acetate, in turn, inspired the RSF / Havana Club collection.

INSPIRATION

Havana Club, Skepta and friends all connect over shared values and attitudes. At a time of global uncertainty and unrest this stands firm now more than ever, with communities – both local and global – coming together to share collective ideas, visions, and discoveries from afar.

Skepta drew upon this sense of discovery and community when he visited Cuba in 2019. In Havana, the international grime icon and Nigerian Yoruba chief found deep links between Yoruba culture and Afro-Cuban spirit. Yoruba heritage is infused throughout Cuban traditions with its links to the West African people and is experienced in the joyful energy and DIY spirit of Cuba which brings people together. It is a creative essence that Skepta also sees reflected in his own London community.

Together, this brought Skepta to the Cuban concept of ACHÉ; interpreted as the creative, universal spirit that binds all of us. It is aché which Skepta has channeled into his Havana Club 7 collaboration, with a bottle design symbolizing his vision of global community, brought to life through creativity, love, and cultural connections.

The new design features traditional Nigerian cultural symbols, including Ewe Oshun leaves used in Yoruba rituals, cowrie shells found in sacred statues of Elegua, as well as Guiro textiles and Conga drums. The bottle is dedicated to a global community of creative thinkers and doers – the people we raise toasts to the world over.
