Moncada Barracks and Sierra Maestra

16 Mar. 2018

Check out Santiago’s famous Moncada Barracks in Santiago de Cuba. Moncada earned immortality when more than 100 revolutionaries led by Fidel Castro stormed Batista’s troops at this important military garrison. Whether you see it as a glorious call to arms or poorly enacted putsch, the 1953 attack on Moncada Barracks is considered the first shot on the road to power. It also provided Fidel Castro with the political pulpit he needed. Some years later, Fidel Castro, Che Guevara, Celia Sanchez and a group of rebels hid out on the Sierra Maestra mountain, considering how and when to bring down the Batista government in 1959. These days, the rebel base camp is as far off the beaten track as it ever was, and the spectacular views make it well worth the hike.
